The event has been promoting the training of human resources and the acceleration in applying technology to society since 1986. In some past editions, the event was organized in cooperation with ACM/SIGMOD and sponsored by the VLDB Endowment, the two largest international nonprofit organizations that aim to promote and exchange academic work in databases and related areas worldwide. The event has been taking place in the five regions of Brazil. It has been growing every year in importance and participation, regarding short courses, articles from foreign universities, the quality of guest speakers and international tutorialists, and the number of participants. From 2010 onwards, the best articles accepted at the event were invited to submit an extended version to be published in a special edition of the Journal of Information and Data Management (Qualis/2020 - B1). 

As Graduate Students make the overwhelming majority of technical presentations, SBBD has supported, for more than 15 years, their participation in the BD Thesis and Dissertation Competition and the Theses and Dissertations Workshop with the help of the cost of presenting your work; and for more than seven years, undergraduate students to present their work at the WTAG - Undergraduate Work Workshop.
