XXV Workshop on Theses and Dissertations in Databases

The Brazilian Symposium on Databases (SBBD) has fostered integration and collaboration among students, professors, researchers, and professionals in the field. The XXV Workshop on Theses and Dissertations in Databases (WTDBD) is an event that is part of SBBD. The workshop is dedicated to the discussion of ongoing work being developed by master’s and doctoral students.

WTDBD aims to provide a constructive environment for discussion. The workshop allows students to disseminate their research results, increasing the visibility of their work. It also provides an opportunity for students to receive feedback from experienced database researchers on their proposals, broadening their research horizons and recommending new ideas and research directions.

Participants of the WTDBD have the opportunity to access a representative and up-to-date overview of database research through their participation in SBBD. This event is recognized as the leading annual event in Latin America in this field.

Submission Instructions

  • Doctoral works: should preferably involve students who have already passed a qualifying examination or an equivalent requirement.
  • Master’s works: priority for acceptance is given to master’s works that have already had at least the research proposal, or an equivalent, approved.

Completed works or works that will be completed by the date of the event will not be accepted at WTDBD 2026.

Submission Details

The papers must follow the SBC template and be submitted exclusively in PDF format through the JEMS system. Papers may be submitted in Portuguese or English. In both cases, the inclusion of an abstract in Portuguese and an abstract in English is mandatory. It is strongly recommended that papers related to doctoral work be submitted in English.

Both master’s and doctoral papers must have a maximum length of 7 pages. The first page is reserved exclusively for submission purposes and must contain the following information:

  • Title of the submitted work;
  • Names of the authors, affiliations, and email addresses;
  • Abstract in Portuguese;
  • Abstract in English;
  • General information about the work:
    • Level of the work: master’s or doctoral;
    • Full name of the student;
    • Full name of the advisor(s) and co-advisor(s), when applicable;
    • Contact email address of the student and the main advisor;
    • University and graduate program or department;
    • Month and year of the student’s admission to the graduate program;
    • Expected month and year of the master’s or doctoral defense;
    • Completed stages/phases and corresponding dates (e.g., all credits completed, completion of the qualifying exam);
    • If applicable, a list of the student’s publications related to the submitted work.

The remaining six pages of the paper must include the research content. The following items are expected:

  • A clear formulation of the research problem;
  • A description of the motivation and justification for the research;
  • The relevance of the research to the field of Databases;
  • The main distinguishing aspects with respect to related work in the literature (a brief comparative overview of related studies);
  • A description of the proposed solution and its specific and expected contribution as a research advance;
  • The research methodology employed in conducting the investigation;
  • A preliminary evaluation of the results obtained, if available;
  • Bibliographic references.

Submissions must have the approval of the student’s advisor, confirmed by a letter of consent submitted via JEMS together with the paper. The letter of consent must indicate the current stage of the research and express agreement with the submission and the student’s participation in WTDBD 2026. The template for the letter of consent can be found here.

The publication of accepted papers is conditional upon registration for SBBD 2026 and an oral presentation by the student during the event.

Questions regarding the submission of WTDBD papers should be directed to cdac@icmc.usp.br (Cristina Dutra de Aguiar – XXV WTDBD Chair). The subject line of the message should be: [WTDBD 2026] Questions.

Use of generative AI tools

The use of generative AI tools (such as LLMs) must be explicitly disclosed by the authors at the time of submission, briefly indicating their purpose (e.g., language editing, assistance with text structuring, generation of examples). Full responsibility for the content remains with the human authors (including verification of all bibliographic references), in accordance with the SBC Code of Conduct for Authors (https://sol.sbc.org.br/index.php/indice/conduta).
