The SQL Marathon is a competition held annually at the most important national event in the Database field, the Brazilian Symposium on Databases (SBBD). Inspired by the SBC programming contest, the SQL Marathon aims primarily to attract students from technical high schools, undergraduate programs, and IT professionals.
The competition challenges participants’ creativity, teamwork, ability to search for new solutions, and skills in solving problems under pressure. During the competition, participants are presented with problems that must be solved exclusively using the SQL language. Each solution is evaluated based on correctness and the number of submissions.
Each team must consist of up to three (3) members, and teams may be formed as follows:
2 high school students + 1 undergraduate student; or
3 high school students
2 undergraduate students + 1 graduate student; or
2 undergraduate students + 1 professional; or
3 undergraduate students
Teams are allowed to use only one computer to solve up to six problems within 2.5 hours. Each team is responsible for bringing its own computer. Please note that computers may fail; therefore, teams are advised to bring a backup device.
Teams may use a set of printed materials, including books, papers, or manuals. The database management system used in the competition will be PostgreSQL 9.4; therefore, familiarity with its SQL syntax is required.
Team rankings will be determined by the number of problems solved. In the event of a tie, the tie-breaking criterion will be the lower number of submissions. There will be two winning teams: one in the high school category and one in the undergraduate category. The winning teams will be those that solve the highest number of problems in the shortest total time within each category (high school and undergraduate).
