Brazilian e-Science Workshop

BreSci

The XX Brazilian e-Science Workshop (BreSci) 2026 aims to contribute to research efforts in the fields of Data Science and e-Science. It seeks to provide a broad forum for discussion on topics related to the development of software infrastructure to support scientific research, with the dual goal of serving both as a new platform for research and scientific experimentation and as a means to support Data Science initiatives that can be transferred to enhance scientific practice.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Over the past decades, science has undergone a major transformation driven by advances in computational methods, which have become established as the third pillar of research, alongside theory and experimentation. This paradigm, known as e-Science, is grounded in intensive computational support for scientific investigation.

In this context, researchers explore vast data collections and large-scale computational resources, often geographically distributed, requiring advanced techniques for data distribution and parallel processing. These characteristics pose significant challenges related to data modeling and management, the development of robust scientific software, and the interpretation of results. Moreover, the inherently multidisciplinary nature of e-Science demands close collaboration among experts from diverse domains.

Recent advances in Computer Science offer promising pathways to address these challenges. Technologies and research areas such as workflow modeling, ontologies, Web services, high-performance computing (HPC), cloud computing, distributed databases, data provenance, Data-Centric AI, and digital curation play a fundamental role in tackling major scientific challenges. At the same time, the pervasiveness of large volumes of data (Big Data) across all areas of knowledge reinforces the need for effective methods to transform raw data into meaningful discoveries.

The advent of Big Data has consolidated the so-called fourth paradigm — data-intensive science— motivating biologists, astronomers, engineers, and mathematicians to confront complex computational problems. Data Science, by integrating methods, processes, and algorithms from fields such as Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science, has emerged as an essential and complementary discipline to e-Science, focused on large-scale knowledge extraction.

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS

The XX BreSci accepts submissions of full papers and short papers, with maximum lengths of 8 pages and 4 pages, respectively. Papers must be written in Portuguese or English and must follow the template recommended by the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC – Sociedade Brasileira de Computação), available at:
https://www.sbc.org.br/documentos-da-sbc/category/169-templates-para-artigos-e-capitulos-de-livros

Submitted works must be original and unpublished. The inclusion of results, although strongly encouraged, is not a mandatory requirement for submission.

All papers (both full and short) will undergo peer review according to the following criteria: relevance to the workshop scope, relevance, technical quality, clarity, originality, and results. Authors must indicate the topic(s) addressed by the paper at the time of submission to assist the Program Committee during the review process.

Each manuscript must be submitted electronically as a PDF file through the JEMS submission system, available at:
https://jems.sbc.org.br/home.cgi?c=4599

The use of generative AI tools (such as LLMs) must be explicitly declared by the authors at submission time, briefly indicating their purpose (e.g., language revision, assistance with text structuring, generation of examples). Full responsibility for the content remains with the human authors (including verification of all bibliographic references), in accordance with the SBC Code of Conduct for Authors, available at:
https://sol.sbc.org.br/index.php/indice/conduta

IMPORTANT DATES

  • Abstract submission deadline: April 18, 2026

  • Paper submission deadline: April 29, 2026

  • Author notification: June 15, 2026

  • Camera-ready submission: June 26, 2026

  • Registration deadline (at least one author per full paper per Workshop; submission of the registration payment receipt and the copyright authorization form via JEMS): to be defined

AUTHOR REGISTRATION

For an accepted paper to be presented and included in the conference proceedings, at least one of the paper’s authors must be registered for SBBD 2026.
