CTDBD – Call for Submissions

The Database Theses and Dissertations Competition (CTDBD) of the Brazilian Symposium on Databases (SBBD) aims to select and award the best PhD thesis and the best Master’s dissertation in the field of Databases in Brazil. The competition is open to works developed at Brazilian educational and research institutions, defended and approved between January 1, 2024, and April 30, 2025. Theses and dissertations must be related to the topics of interest of the SBBD.

Theses and dissertations will be evaluated based on their scientific and technological contributions, as well as their potential impact on the state of the art and/or their innovative nature in the field of Databases and data-centric applications.

To promote high-quality research developed in Brazil and encourage broad participation from the community, CTDBD 2025 will follow the structure below: annual competition, simplified submission, online selection process, and awarding of the best dissertation and best thesis, to be presented in person at SBBD 2025.

IMPORTANT DATES

Phase 1: Submission and ranking

  • Abstract registration: May 22, 2025  June 3rd, 2025 June 10th, 2025

  • Submission (executive summary, proof of defense, and full thesis/dissertation): June 3, 2025  June 6th, 2025 June 10th, 2025

  • Notification of selected works for Phase 2: July 14, 2025 July 17, 2025

Phase 2: Online presentation

  • Online presentations of selected works: July 28 to August 11, 2025 August 12 to August 14, 2025

  • Announcement of results: by August 15, 2025 (best thesis and best dissertation)

  • Final version submission for the Proceedings: August 19, 2025

Phase 3: Presentation and award ceremony of the two winners (best thesis and best dissertation) at SBBD 2025

Selection Process

The selection will occur in two phases:

Phase 1: Each submission will be reviewed by at least three reviewers, who will evaluate the materials submitted (see the “Submission Instructions” section). Based on the reviews, the three top-rated works in each category (PhD/Master’s) will be selected: up to three PhD theses and up to three Master’s dissertations. In case of a tie, more works may be selected.

Phase 2: Authors of the selected works must present their work in a public online session to an Evaluation Committee. Each presentation must last 15 minutes and must be delivered by the author (PhD or Master). A 15-minute Q&A session will follow each presentation. The session schedule will be announced 15 days in advance. The best thesis and dissertation will be selected based on the scientific content (as evaluated in Phase 1), the quality of the oral presentation, and how well the author responds to questions.

Awards and Publication

The awarded works will be presented in person at a dedicated session of SBBD 2025. An extended abstract of the winners and honorable mentions will be published in the SBBD 2025 Proceedings alongside satellite event materials. Awarded authors (of the best thesis and dissertation) must be present at the symposium to deliver their presentations. Authors are required to use their own equipment (laptops) for the presentation. If needed, a request for equipment must be made in advance to the CTDBD coordination.

Submission Instructions

Submissions must be made by the author (PhD or Master) through the JEMS system. It is assumed that the advisor endorses the submission. Submissions must be made electronically through the following link:
https://jems.sbc.org.br/home.cgi?c=4673

Each submission must include the following documents in PDF format:

  • Executive summary in the specified format

  • Document proving that the thesis/dissertation was defended and approved during the eligible period (e.g., diploma, signed defense minutes, certificate)

  • Full text of the thesis/dissertation

All documents must be in PDF. The evaluation will be based on the executive summary. The full document will serve as a reference source for the reviewers.

Executive Summary Format

The executive summary must include:

  • 1 cover page

  • Up to 2 pages of detailed description in predefined sections

  • 1 page for scientific and technological production
